Liming is a traditional way to treat biosolids like municipal wastewater sludge or animal wastes, providing multiple effect of dewatering, hygienisation and stabilisation.
Liming is a traditional and proven way to treat municipal wastewater sludge and animal by-products, generally called as biosolids. It provides multiple effect – helps dewatering, controls most of odours, provides complete hygienisation necessary for further reuse and enriches the treated biosolids with Ca ions, beneficial for further reuse in fields.
3 main liming techniques are used at biosolids treatment:
- Pre-liming where lime is mixed with biosolids in a liquid form prior to their dewatering
- Post-liming where quicklime is mixed with dewatered biosolids in a special mixer
- The CODECAL process, developed by Carmeuse, combining advantages of both processes above
Key applications
Key benefits for BIOCALCO range use in biosolids treatment
- BIOCALCO is the only lime range in the market, developed especially for biosolids treatment
- The BIOCALCO range covers all main treatment methods
- The BIOCALCO “Q” range is available in 4 main reactivity grades, customised to individual liming ways
- The BIOCALCO S fineness enables preparation of consistent milk-of-lime without abrasive substances, which might affect centrifuge dewatering
- Content of metals in BIOCALCO is safely below the acceptance limits for agricultural soil amendments
- Available in a ready-made slurry (milk-of-lime) form (BIOCALCO M) in a range of concentrations up to 50%
- Significant milk-of-lime delivery costs reduction thanks to high concentration (BIOCALCO M 40, M 50)
